Sacred Heart School, Corryong

" I will be with you always until the end of time. "  Mt 18:3

In 1962 Corryong's first Parish Priest, Fr. Leo Lacey had the drive and vision to establish a Catholic School in Corryong and Sacred Heart School was built. A plot of land was willed for this purpose by Dan Cronin and community energy was harnessed as the parishioners worked with pick and shovel to lay the foundations of our school. Tractors were borrowed and sites leveled. Fundraising efforts began in earnest.

On 18th August 1963, a crowd of over 400 people watched the blessing and official opening of the new Catholic School and convent in Corryong by His Grace Bernard Stewart, Bishop of Sandhurst.

The school opened on February 4th 1964 with 55 pupils from Prep to Grade 6, in the care of the Sisters of St Joseph. The Sisters depended on the generosity of parishioners to meet them at the train in Albury and bring them up to Corryong. The first principal of the school was Sister Eugene Gallagher rsj and her assistant was Sr. Ligouri Harrington rsj. Marianne Zeinstra, the first full time lay teacher at the school, entered the Josephites following her experience of the Sisters at Corryong.

Sr Patricia George rsj taught at the school in 1970 and again from 1992 and continues to minister in Corryong. She writes in 1995 in The Pilgrim, " We lift our eyes to the mountains and are reminded that our God is eternal and that God's love is everlasting ". Sr Pat remains part of the very fabric of our school.

Community support for a Catholic Secondary School led to the decision to extend to year 7/8 and a new facility, named the Lacey Centre, was built in 2008. The BER funding allowed for modernisation of classrooms and a new open learning library which was completed in June 2010.

As the school celebrates its fiftieth year, we are grateful to Sr Therese Quinn rsj for the design of our Jubilee Window which captures the heart of our school.

Fr Leo Lacey wrote in his last days, " Enjoy yourself using the good things God has given us. Enjoy yourself with the wonderful people God has made and enjoy yourself living with your God ". (April 30th 1979)

In Corryong, the school and parish continue to breathe in unison.
